HE NEVER KNEW ABOUT OUR SON
Emma Shaw thought divorce was the hardest thing she would ever survive. Then, two weeks after her marriage to Ryan Scott ended, she discovered she was pregnant. She meant to tell him. Until she heard Ryan say publicly that becoming a father was the last thing he wanted while he rebuilt his life. After years of being the person Ryan always promised to come back to later, Emma believed him. So she disappeared. Nearly six years later, Emma returns with five-year-old Luke—the son Ryan never knew existed. She has no intention of telling him. But one school emergency ruins everything. Ryan walks into the principal’s office, sees a little boy with his eyes, his expressions, even the same nervous habit he has carried since childhood—and hears Luke say the words neither of them can ignore. “You look like me.” The truth comes out quickly. But discovering Luke is his son is the easy part. Ryan has already missed the first word, the first tooth, the first birthday, the first day of school, the fevers, the scraped knees, and five years of ordinary moments he can never get back. Biology may make him Luke’s father. It does not make him Dad. That is something Ryan will have to earn. And while Ryan struggles to build a relationship with the son he never knew existed, Emma is forced to face an uncomfortable truth of her own: she may have believed she was protecting her child, but she also made a life-changing decision for Ryan based on one sentence spoken by a broken man—and on all the wounds their marriage had already taught her to expect. Now they must learn how to co-parent without repeating the mistakes that destroyed them. How to separate anger from parenthood. How to let Luke love them both without making him choose. And eventually, how to decide whether the love that once failed them deserves another chance. Because this time, Ryan cannot keep promising he will come home when everything else is finished. If he wants his son and Emma he has to learn how to come home while life is still happening.
