The Man They Buried

Mira Voss loved her husband. Not perfectly. Not blindly. But truly. Elias made her coffee too strong, stole the blankets, remembered every small thing she forgot, and promised they would grow old arguing about the same harmless habits. Then Elias dies unexpectedly. His body is identified. His family mourns him. On Tuesday, Mira watches the man she expected to spend her life with lowered into the ground. On Friday night, her phone rings. ELIAS. She answers. At first there is only breathing. Then the dead man says her name. Mira tells herself grief can make the mind cruel. But the calls return - never on schedule, never often enough to become normal. The voice remembers private jokes, unfinished conversations, the side of the bed she sleeps on, and secrets nobody else should know. Then one call tells her not to go home. Hours later, someone breaks into the house.
